Woody Guthrie’s 100th Birthday

Another link to the Star Tribune, who must have folk music on the brain lately.  Here’s a great article by folksinger Charlie Maguire about Guthrie’s 100th birthday that was in this morning’s opinion section.  I’m sure Katherine Kersten will have a bitter rebuttal next week that charges Guthrie with leading us down the dusty road to socialism and Obamacare, so let’s enjoy Maguire’s thoughtful tribute while we can.

Maguire himself recorded some underrated folk albums in the Woody Guthrie tradition which we usually have in stock in the shop.  There’s generations of songwriters influenced by Guthrie, including some great young artists here in the Twin Cities like Jack Klatt and Gabe Barnett.

And you can hear another great folk tradition today at 3pm, when Dakota Dave Hull will perform some of the classic American ragtime guitar he intends to collection in a book and CD package (click here to check out his Kickstarter campaign).
