“…Our only safety depends on the total extermination of the Indians,” wrote an editorialist only five days after the (original) Wounded Knee massacre.

“Having wronged them for centuries we had better, in order to protect our civilization, follow it up with one more wrong
and wipe these untamed and untamable creatures from the face of the earth.”

That editorialist was L. Frank Baum, a famous man.  And in his famous story the famous Dorothy found the value in what she had by losing it and struggling to get it back.
