The City of Red Wing is considering replacing Columbus Day with First People’s Day

There’s a story in this morning’s Star Tribune about the City of Red Wing, where City Council members are considering replacing Columbus Day with a new holiday, First People’s Day — we think it’s a long-overdue change and we hope our own city council here in Minneapolis will consider it as well.

In 2011 we produced a radio program about the Native American protests of the late 60s and early 70s which featured all kinds of great songs by artists like Tom Bee, Redbone and Buffy Saint-Marie — It was based on a series of posts here on the Hymie’s blog from the previous October (all collected in links here), and we hoped it would inspire people to re-consider Columbus Day as an anachronistic holiday.

Here for the first time is the entire radio program we produced, divided into four parts because of the limitations of our blog’s format.
