You saw it here first folks. The Mayor has proclaimed April 16th, 2011 to be Hymie’s Vintage Records day in the City of Minneapolis! If you don’t believe us, you can come to the shop and see the proclamation for yourself.
And what better day to come to Hymie’s than on April 16th, 2011, the fourth annual Record Store Day and our first celebrated in the new location? Aside from the unbelievable-but-true dozen live acts performing, which we have been featuring this past week on the website, there will be an exciting street fair. Just this week we heard from the Frattalone’s Ace Hardware across the street, who couldn’t resist all the fun and they’ve rented one of those gigantic inflatable castles for kids to jump in!
Here’s a little introduction to a couple more of the artists participating (And then back to the live music tomorrow, because we still have several more groups to feature):
Vinyl Afterlife is an amazing artistic enterprise that answers the question we are often asked – What happens to the records that are damaged beyond all hope? Surely the don’t go into the … dumpster! Around here they go to our friend Paul at Vinyl Afterlife, and they come back to us as genuine record label coasters and record jacket notebooks. If you have been in the shop you have probably already noticed them.
Paul was also instrumental in the success of our Winter Record Sale at the Cedar Cultural Center this past January, and will be helping out on Record Store Day in the same capacity. He is proof that there’s truth in the old adage – Surround yourself with good people and good things will happen!
Another artist you will find at our Record Store Day street festival is our old friend Benjamin Krikava, a potter who works and shows his work at Fire on the Greenway. Yeah, pottery isn’t really record-related in any way, but we wanted to have some local artists involved in our street festival. We really love Ben’s work and think you’ll like it too.
The next thing we want to tell you about is the artist collective Rouge Citizen. Its four members – Shawn Dalsen, Eric Mattheis, Matt McGorry, and Matt Wells – Will present a live painting presentation outside the shop on Record Store Day. After the huge success of their Gallery13 show last month, “Exit Rogue Citizen”, we can only imagine what these guys will have in store for us. Here’s a great timelapse video of the guys at work:
Hey, remember the timelapse video we made in the old record shop?
And that rounds out our website coverage of the artists participating in our Record Store Day street festival. You’ll find a lot more on the street, including neighborhood organizations and a table from the Midtown Farmer’s Market, but we’ll leave it all a surprise for you. Tomorrow’s post will return to featuring the musicians, as we get into the last week of preparations!
