Probably a bad sales day…

A lot of promotional records turn up with this date on them – Tuesdays are, after all, the day that records are released.  I guess I can’t say why but it really does make sense when you think about it.

And I can add a true story:  A friend of mine had a job interview on September 11th and it was in the World Trade Center.  Being so fanatic a record collector that he would value records over a paying job, he blew off the interview to get a copy of Bob Dylan’s Love and Theft, which was being released that day.  I think if you bought a copy of it the first day you also received Bob Dylan’s burrito recipe book.  There was some special feature that enticed my friend enough to piss away a chance at a good job to buy a Bob Dylan album and take it back to his borough apartment.  Being a record collector saved his life!

I believe that Superchunk’s ‘Here’s To Shutting Up’, complete with two songs referencing plane crashes, came out on this day. They toured, filming the tour for a film (Crowding Up Your Visual Field) which revealed it to be the most depressing tour of all time; they wouldn’t tour for almost a decade.

They Might Be Giants put out a record as well. I don’t remember which one, but it was still a time when each release was a big deal, in my book.
