Papa John

A lot of folks ask if we’re doing better in the new shop, and goodness gracious the answer is yes! Besides the fact we don’t have to worry about water coming from above and below every time it rains, we’re finding a real incentive to settle in and grow the shop here.  A lot of our good feelings about this space come from the man upstairs, as I sometimes call him.  No not the good Lord, but the landlord – The nice fella who moved his business upstairs so we could create the new Hymie’s here five blocks east.

And a lot of people have asked about Papa John and Sue, because Laura and I speak so highly of them.  I thought today I’d share a few tracks from Papa John’s records.  This first track is Shel Silverstein’s “Beans Taste Fine” from the album of the same name, pictured above.  Sue tells me that Swallowtail, the original label, was not happy with the original cover, but I’ve always thought it was a riot:

And this second track is one of my favorite tunes by “Spider” John Koerner, “Takin’ My Time”:

Some of you have asked about Mill City Music, the business upstairs.  You can learn a little about them by following the link.  And you can also get brand new copies of Papa John’s Goin’ Home LP only here at Hymie’s.  We have added a variety of other interesting new LPs to our shop recently, courtesy of Mill City.  Here’s a song from Goin’ Home, classic Americana that surprisingly has not appeared as recorded by anyone here on this site.  This is Papa John’s version of “Goodnight Irene”:
