(“Heartbreak Hotel” by Hoyt Axton)

Since we have recently posted several songs written by Hoyt Axton, and since his songs have appeared throughout this blog’s three year history (click here for an example), we felt obligated to share this 45 that passed through the shop recently. His mother, Mae Boren Axton, co-wrote “Heartbreak Hotel” with Elvis Presley and Tommy Durden in 1956.

This 1990 recording is fun, but it doesn’t really do justice to Hoyt Axton’s great career as a singer and songwriter. He and Mae are the only mother/son team to chart #1 hits as songwriters, and his albums are full of great story songs along the lines of Tom T. Hall and also good Waylon-style country songs.
