Last night Hymies hosted a celebration for Carlos Santanas 64th birthday complete with a coloring contest and a chili cook-off. Everyone from age 2 to 65 colored a copy of Santana, filling in Lee Conklins famous black and white design with crayons, markers, glitter glue and water colors.
Oh, and…
Bitter Roots played an amazing set of Santana covers. They had never played any of these songs before we invited them to play five weeks ago, and they cooked through “Jingo”, “Evil Ways” and more as though they had done it a thousand times before. Watching them play was really inspirational because theyre such dedicated musicians.
Its really easy to think to yourself – Oh, oh, and a band could play Santana covers – but a lot harder for somebody to start from scratch and make the music happen. Especially make it happen so well.
